Coresus und Callirhoë (Koresus and Kallirhoë) c1765 by French Painter Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732 - 1806); one of the most prolific artist of the Rococo Movement, creating over 550 paintings alone; not to mention his many drawings and etchings.
Jean-Honore Fragonard depiction of Coresus and Callirhoë, shows two heavenly figures, one with a dagger in his right hand and a torch in his left hand descending on the High Priest Coresus as he plunges a dagger into his chest; sacrificing himself in order to save his beloved Callirhoë who has fainted upon witnessing his sacrifice for her; while men, women and children watch in disbelief to what has just taken place.
