Death of Hippolytos c1800 by French Painter Carle Vernet (1758 - 1836); and lithographer known for his dynamic paintings of horses in racing, hunting or cavalry scenes.
This paint depicts the Greek Mythological Tragedy of Hippolytos; who's stepmother Phaidra had fallen in love with him. Upon rejecting her affections, she left an a letter accusing him of defiling her and then she killed herself.
Hippolytos father Theseus, became so enraged upon reading the letter that he banished his son and pleaded to the gods to kill him.
As a result, when Hippolytos was riding his chariot by the sea the sight of a sea monster frightened the horses and Hippolytos loss control of the chariot, which led to the horses dragging him to his death.
