Description
In a Roman Osteria (Fra et Romersk Osteria) c1866 by Danish Painter Carl Heinrich Bloch (1834 - 1890); was influenced by the works of Rembrandt, and was considered to be one of Denmarks most outstanding artist, with one of his most remembered works being a series of 23 paintings on the life of Christ commissioned for the King's Chapel at Frederiksborg Palace.
This piece was commissioned Blochs friend Moritz G. Melchor (who is included in the background of the painting talking with friends; and the figure with his back toward the view is Bloch himself), and is one of his better known genre paintings.
Side Note: An Osteria was originally a place where wine and simple foods were served; but today are more focused on foods that are a local specialty on a short menu.
This is a retouched digital art old masters reproduction of a public domain image.
