Description
Omnia Vincit Amor, or The Power of Love in the Three Elements c1809 by American Painter Benjamin West (1738 - 1820); who specialized in portrait paintings of the Rococo, Baroque, Neoclassicism, Renaissance, Georgian Periods.
Omnia Vincit Amor, (Love Triumphs Over Everything) is a quotation from Virgil’s Eclogues.
Venus, the Goddess of love, is shown on the left with her attributes the doves and with her small son, Amor; armed with a bow and arrows, crasping a cloth belt that is around her waist.
A young Deity, presumably Hymen, God of marriage, holds a flaming torch in his right hand while grasping cords in his left hand that leash an Eagle.
The Eagle in the artwork symbolizes all the creatures living in the element Air, while the Hippocampus (Sea Horse) represents the creatures of the Water, and the Lion represents the creatures that roam on the surface of the Earth.
The fourth element, Fire, is implicit in the Goddess herself, in the winged Amores, or little Loves, and most particularly in Hymen’s flaming torch.
