Romaine Endormie (Roman woman sleeping) c1859 by French Painter Félix-Auguste Clément (1826 - 1888); an Orientalist style painter.
This is a beautiful classic nude painting of a young Roman woman sleeping as dusk approaches, on a bed that over sees a beautiful landscape of a slow flowing river, trees, an expanse of grasslands; and further off in the distance a town set against a backdrop of a mountainscape.
The open enclosure in which she sleeps has a large balcony on which four large columns rest with a pigeon napping and a dove prunes itself. In her left hand is a peacock fan and she is wearing gold earrings.
She is partially covered by a yellow, red and green striped sheet and the amply cushioned bed is covered in a floral pattern red and gold bed cover and above that white sheets that match the large embroidered pillow and meshed pillow cover; and finally a green tied off drape hangs slightly over her head.
