The slave market of ancient Rome is a depiction of the humiliating a degradation that a slave had to endure in ancient Rome of in any slave based society.
The scene has a young lady being sold as potential merchants bid on her at auction. to her left we can see children in despair waiting their turn at the auction block as well as a mother with a baby in her arms and a child by her side clinging to her garment.
In the background we can also see men of the different nationalities also ready to be sold to the highest bidder; while behind the auctioneer sitting at a table are the accountants recording the purchases.
