This Rococo period painting depicts Venus the Goddess of love trying to get the handsome Adonis - the hunter; with whom she has fallen in love with, to stay with her rather than go hunting.
As she grabs his right arm with her right hand and his right shoulder with her left hand to prevent him from leaving; a cherub that is below her is grabbing on to the garment of Adonis to prevent him from walking away; as he has his spear in his left hand ready to go on the hunt.
Behind Venus is Cupid, who is holding a golden arrow in his right hand, and a red quiver that is resting across his chest, which is held in place by a strap of the same color.
Above Cupid is a pearl and gold chariot that is floating on a white cloud being pulled under the direction of two flying cherubs above more clouds; by two white doves that have ribbons tied around their necks.
On the ground near Adonis and in front of a tree is one more cherub that is holding two hunting dogs that belong to Adonis by their leaches; one white and black, the other white and brown, as he looks up at Adonis, waiting to go on the hunt.
